Sudanese Refugees – Chad 2023

A COMMUNITY PROJECT
IN FARCHANA AND GOZ BEIDA, CHAD

When we are alone we can’t but when we are together we can do BIG things. When we paint we are like a family.
— Emanuel, employer JRS

Refugee communities are often forgotten amidst new conflicts emerging every day, but their challenges and pain stay the same.

We worked in Chadian refugee camps with Masalit youth who have fled the Darfur conflict in Sudan. Together with students, we created two school walls and conduct two parallel workshops to promote their strengths, encourage them and reduce conflict in the group to create a sense of community and mutual trust.

Through creating a common canvas, the community was able to express their own culture and get a glimpse of hope amidst their challenging circumstances.

I’ve learned that the most important thing is to help each other, you can’t do it alone.

When we painted these walls in early 2023 with the Masalit people in the Farchana and Goz Beida refugee camps in Chad, we had no idea that only months later violence would break out in Sudan – including in their region of origin.

Along with others, the Masalit people we worked with now, had sought refuge from massacres and mass rape since the beginning of the Darfur conflict in 2003.

It is estimated that between two and three million people have been displaced from their homes since 2003, and countless have been murdered. May history not repeat itself to this extent.
